JAS maintains two sanctuaries in Jackson County. The Phyllis Haehnle sanctuary is the largest Audubon sanctuary in MI and can have autumn crane counts in the thousands. The Kate Palmer Sanctuary is a 53 acre site which contains various habitats and has a rich diversity of wildflowers and other plant life.

We simply need that wild country available to us,
even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in.
For it can be a means of reassuring ourselves of our sanity as creatures,a part of the geography of hope.
