U of M Museum of Natural History Skins Collection

  • Tuesday, November 28, 2017
  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Join the Tuesday morning group for a visit to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History's bird skins collection.

Carolina Parakeet by Bill Sonnett

NOTE:  This is no longer housed at the museum but is off campus in south Ann Arbor on Varsity Dr.

In this context, “skins” is museum-speak for the skin and feathers of birds.  Our guide will be Janet Hinshaw, the collection’s manager and knowledgeable birder.  The collection has 176,000 specimens, about two-thirds of the world’s species, is the sixth largest in North America, and includes extinct species like the ivory-billed woodpecker.  A carpool will leave from the I-94 – Mt.  Hope Road (exit 150) commuter lot, 42.292183, -84.207388, at 9 a.m.  If you would rather drive separately, meet the group at the Varsity Dr. facility at 9:30.
